61. DBforums - Double Quit In M Interesting.
As any other language, MUMPS is bound by certain rules, and some rules areapplies before any other rules. This is a common programming construction.

Paul Kadow
Jul 9 2002 6:35 I have come across what I consider a rather interesting feature/bug of MUMPS, for
lack of a better term, I will call it the "double quit."
Consider a simple example:
Say variable 'String' contains 100 substring each delimited by "/"
So the code: f i=1:1:$L(String,"/") s subs=$p(String,"/",i) w !,subs would write out each of the substrings one on each line for 100 lines. But suppose we modify the code to read: f i=1:1:$L(String,"/") q:i=50 s subs=$p(String,"/",i) w !,subs Now, what I find interesting here, is that the "q:i=50" overrides the For Statement. Should not the For Statement continue on to 100 but the $piece and write statements stop at 49? I welcome any thoughts, comments. FileMan FAQs Frequently Asked Questions Is FileMan a toolset, or a DBMS? Is it reliable? Is it documented? Is it relational? ... How do I get Fileman? Is FileMan a toolset, or a DBMS?
It's both. The DBMS can be used "stand-alone", without programmer intervention. But the various components (Input, Deleting, Lookup, Listing, etc.) are also accessible as M[UMPS] routines. The programmer calls allow either interactive dialogue with the user, or 'silent' calls to the database. FileMan thus functions as a full-blown API (Applications Programming Interface) for the M[UMPS] programmer. Because users of the interactive, menu-driven components of Fileman are referencing the same APIs that programmers call to create custom applications, user interface and results are consistent. Is it reliable?
FileMan is a proven product that has been in use in hundreds of sites for nearly 20 years. It is designed to foster robust, consistent, and easily-enhanced M[UMPS] applications. Is it documented?
Yes, extensively. Documentation of the system is available from the perspective of the User, the Developer, and the M[UMPS] programmer. This documentation exists in browser-readable HTML right here online Is it relational?
